5 Ways to Pull Yourself out of a Funk

I am uncertain as to what happened or why but within a days’ time, I seemed to have slipped into a slump. Now, being that I am a licensed counselor, slumps don’t usually catch me off guard. It is part of my job to notice and identify changes, so I am pretty aware when things begin to shift. Not this time. I was just feeling, blah. Being certain that I am not the only one to experience such feelings, I’ll let you in on a little secret of how I came right on out of that funk.

We all know the story of Cain and Abel and if you don’t, feel free to browse Genesis 4. Well, Cain’s countenance fell after God didn’t accept his offering. Translation: he was sad, depressed, feeling low. God told him, “if you do well, you will be accepted. But if you don’t, sin is waiting for you at your door. You should rule over it” Translation: if you do what needs to be done, you’d feel better and you won’t have to worry about the enemy using this situation to get you to do something you’d regret.

I thought about this story and I decided I was not going to allow myself to fall deeper into a mood that would not benefit me, my husband, nor my children. If I allowed my emotions to control me, I would not be able to get anything done and that meant I would not be operating in my purpose. Now, I understand, sometimes we need to take a minute, but this wasn’t that. I wasn’t tired, overwhelmed, or overworked. This was something totally different.

So, here are 5 things I did to help me lift my countenance and hopefully, one or two may help you.

1.     Take a little time to relax. (i.e., hot bath)

2.     Read a novel you really enjoy for 20 minutes.

3.     Choose to have calming behaviors. (i.e., listen to music you like)

4.     Choose intimacy instead of isolation.

5.     In prayer, identify where you are emotionally and state where you want to be. State how you want to feel.
